Jesse Michel was born on October 19,1952 in Chula Vista, California, a city located in the South Bay area of San Diego county. He grew up in San Ysidro, California, a small town on the Tijuana border. Being raised in a musical home where the whole family played music, he soon realized that music was being played elsewhere, other than in the living room of his own home; it was being played in the neighborhood. He was fortunate enough to have grown up in a neighborhood of musicians. Three garage bands later emerged, made up of the same neighborhood kids, including Jesse. A few years down the road, still in their early teens, these bands played around the small town (and were actually paid). At the age of fifteen, he discovered that Tijuana was a hot spot for music, and immediately a period of time began in his life in which he would walk three miles to play across the border.
